I just read a really good article by Cay Horstmann called ‘How to Become a Better Java Developer’ at InformIT:

All novice developers, regardless of the programming language they are learning, should read the article (I strongly suggest it). It has a lot of really good pointers for novice developers.
Cay Horstmann has written over 15 books on Java and is considered an expert on Java.
