Switching my Email Client Program

I have been using the Eudora email client program since the 90’s. Its been an excellent program for handling email. Capitalware uses HostGator for capitalware.com (and mqtechconference.com) and about every 6 months or so, HostGator switches their SSL certificate. I don’t know why they do it, they just do it.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, HostGator switched SSL certificates again but this time the hostname (in the certificate) has an asterisk (“*”) at the beginning. Eudora pops up the error message “Certificate bad: Destination Host name does not match host name in certificate”. I clicked “trust this certificate” but Eudora will not use it. When it first happened, I contacted HostGator support. I spent over 2 hours on the chat session, first with the Support person then with their technical support person and I went around in circles with them. They were fixated on port numbers (which were correct) and would not listen to me. Generally speaking, I have always found HostGator support to be good, but after that experience, they get a big fat zero out of 10. A total waste of my time. So, the only way for me to get my email was to turn off SSL in Eudora which is not a very bright idea.

So, this weekend I installed Mozilla Thunderbird email client program. I used the Eudora Rescue program to fix/cleanup any issues that Thunderbird may have importing my Eudora email then I did the import in Thunderbird. I followed Eudora Rescue’s instructions of doing the mail first then the Settings. Everything appear to work just fine except for the SMTP port number. For some reason, the port number was set to 1 (odd but an easy fix).

The only thing Thunderbird’s import did not include was my message filters in Eudora, so I guess I’ll have to manually create all of them. Yuk.

I followed Mozilla’s instructions for creating a new profile (with a different directory) and for migrating a profile to another PC, so now I need to finish testing that Robocopy can sync Thunderbird from my desktop to my laptop (one-way sync).

Therefore, if you send me an email and you don’t hear from me after 24 hours then either post a message here or call me.
